The ACO is keen to see its Cadet and Adult members progress and as an enthusiastic "Investor in People" at both HQAC and Squadron levels is pleased to provide additional national qualifications in the form of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and British Training Education Certificate (BTECs).
Based at The Cadet Training Centre in Frimley, Surrey, the Cadet Vocational Qualification Office (CVQO) is a registered Charity responsible for organising vocational qualifications for members of the Combined Cadet Forces, Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps.
CVQO is accredited by Edexcel, City & Guilds and the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) to deliver a wide range of qualifications that have been carefully selected to show employers and educators the wide range of skills including leadership, teambuilding, problem-solving, communication, health and physical fitness that young people and adults learn through the Cadet Forces.
By offering qualifications designed to develop and improve these important practical skills CVQO aims to provide its members with greater opportunities in both the workplace and in higher education
The BTEC Award in Aviation Studies was started in 1996 in Thames Valley Wing ATC and now extends throughout the ATC. As of 13 Sep 05, 6177 full Awards have been achieved.
Each individual Wing is responsible for the management of the Award for their cadets. This Award is not managed through CVQO.
The Award is recognised by the RAF as the equivalent of two GCSEs in Science, grade A to C. To qualify for the Award, a cadet must have passed the Staff Cadet Part 1 examination. No other work by the cadet is required.
To be able to offer the Award, the Wing HQ has to be recognised as an Edexcel Centre, currently 26 Wings are accredited centres. Once a cadet has completed Staff Cadet Part 1, the Wing HQ must register that cadet and then claim the Award. This process can be entirely electronic, entirely manual, or a hybrid of both, depending on the circumstances of the Wing.
This internationally respected qualification is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at A*- C level (Standard grades at levels 1-3 in Scotland).
The course mixes theory and practical elements with an emphasis on leadership, teamwork, communications, problem solving and fitness.
The syllabus has been designed to improve valuable life skills including CV preparation, interviewing techniques, communication, first aid, adventure training, health and nutrition.
And best of all, it's FREE for Cadets!
Cadets must be 16 to enrol in the BTEC Programme. To enrol, contact your Cadet headquarters. Please note: In addition to existing Cadet activities, Cadets are required to complete the course syllabus which includes supervised adventure training activities and occasional weekend training. All coursework is assessed by Edexcel.
